Journal entry, — Manifest, AIR Trade Station.
Fritz
The explosive start is barely behind me when I set off for Manifest. That is currently the central trading hub in Exordium. If you want to buy or sell something, that is where you go.
When I arrive at the AIR Trade Station in Manifest, a huge freighter catches my eye. A Bowhead.
I had only wanted to look at it. You do not miss a Bowhead, especially not when you are flying a Merlin yourself. My Merlin looked tiny next to it, and I was fairly impressed.
The Bowhead's pilot was called Fritz. And Fritz had a nice yellow skull next to his name in the overview. I took that as a subtle hint to be careful.
Shortly after, Fritz invited me to his fleet.
I declined.
That was perhaps not especially polite, but it was my first reflex. In New Eden, an invitation from a stranger is not automatically a good thing. Maybe it is a gift. Maybe it is a trick. Maybe you simply do not yet understand the rule by which you are about to do something wrong.
Besides, I was not entirely sure how fleets and friendly fire work in Exordium. So I stayed cautious.
I had already left the system when I read in local chat what Fritz was actually doing: he was inviting new pilots to his fleet so they could take a fully-fitted frigate out of his ship.
So I came back. The prospect of bait this tempting persuaded my caution to take a step back.
Dock, leave my frigate, then back to Manifest in the capsule. This time I accepted the fleet invite and opened the ship maintenance bay of his Bowhead.
Inside lay frigate after frigate.
Not thrown together. Fully fitted, from different factions, labelled by role. Sniper, brawler, whatever you wanted. You could see that someone had thought this through. Not just „here, take a ship“ but „here are several options; pick the one that suits you.“
I took a Kestrel.
And then fireworks went off.
It genuinely delighted me. It was completely over the top for a small frigate, but that was exactly what made it beautiful. Fritz congratulated me on my choice. I thanked him politely in fleet chat, left a little heart, and flew back to my home station.
There I took my time to look at what else the fit still needed. Only one thing was missing: Light Missiles level 1. I bought the skillbook on the spot and injected it. A few minutes later I had learned it and took my seat in my brand-new frigate.
I named the Kestrel „Fritz“.
Up to that point I had just under 10 million ISK in my account. Hard-earned with the career agents — and it felt like a fortune. The price tag on the Kestrel with Fritz's fit stood at 5.8 million. More than half my net worth, gifted.
A starter frigate is not a fortune for many people. I have learned that already. But for me it was.
More than the frigate, what counted was the gesture.
New Eden is often cold and unforgiving. But not today.
Today there was Fritz.
